"The Exploration of Bears."
Over the summer of 2024, I was given the opportunity to work with a local printmaker in my home town of Rockford, Illinois. During this residency, I created a series of work based off of a theme of my choosing. The residency lasted from June 5th - June 14th, 2024.
I worked with Sarah McNamara, an artist located in Rockford, Illinois. Sarah is a local printmaker who has a storefront called SRM Prints Studio + Gift Shop
The theme I chose for this residency was bears. Over my 2023-2024 school year, a lot of my work focused on or included bears. I wanted to hone in on this theme and see where I could take it.
In total, I created seven pieces of work. Each piece was a relief cut print. Five of the seven were woodcuts, one of the seven was carved from linoleum, and one was purely letter press. The prints were a combination of both relief printing and woodblock type. I created five to ten copies of each piece of work.
At the end of the residency, I have a show / print sale at Sarah’s shop. During this event, I was able to talk to people about my art and sell my work. I had all of my prints displayed on a series of tables in the middle of the shop. Towards the back of the shop I displayed each block that was used to print. I also had an interactive part where I allowed people to come in and try carving into wood and linoleum. The show was great and very successful for me. I sold almost all of the 60 pieces that I made.
